An idea to occupy the 2014 elections by challenging the two-party monopoly in 100 congressional districts, with 100 candidates running on an independent political program for peace; and racial, social and economic justice.
Dear reader,
This cover letter introduces my analysis below, “Occupy the 2014 Elections” as a vision of where independent, left wing politics might set its sights in the electoral arena. The title suggests this ambitious idea is possible in 2014, yet I acknowledge the short time frame is a significant hurdle. Regardless of this, or other hurdles, I think the idea a relevant strategic marker.
For some years, left and progressive movements have struggled to find an electoral strategy that fits the historical need and is also within their capacity to carryout. This analysis creates a mental image to coalesce around that might lead to resolving both the strategic and capacity issues.
My reading of public opinion suggests a sizable section of the electorate, perhaps 20 percent, would be open to the left political program suggested in the analysis and another 20 percent to some of the points. The growing radicalization occurring among millions that I discuss offers opportunities that were out of reach just few years ago.
In order to capitalize on this shifting political opinion and the widespread frustration with the two parties the left needs to make elections an arena of struggle and enlarge its presence. The electorate can move left, but only if there are working class and socialist-oriented solutions in the public debate to inspire and excite them. Elections provide a forum to jump-start such thinking.
Public opinion of the two parties of capitalism and Congress are at all-time lows. People are looking for leadership and ideas that speak to their discontents and that are big enough to match the multiple crises the nation faces.
The 2014 election is ripe with opportunity. I hope this idea and analysis might find some traction. Your thoughts, criticism and additions are most welcome. Contact me directly or if you wish comment at: http://occupy2014election.blogspot.com/.
